Character's background (their past and present):
Merlin at the Merlin Wiki.

Character's personality:
When Merlin first arrived in Camelot, he was optimistic and a little naive to the ways of the world. He started out entirely trusting. Immediately, it's shown that he has incredible talent with his magic and quickly dove into his studies as both a sorcerer and as a physician's assistant. He's quick to stand up for what is right, including picking a fight with a noble, the Prince of Camelot, when he was picking on a servant.

Despite their initial differences, he and Arthur became close friends. He trusted Arthur with his life when he was poisoned and went after Arthur whenever an adventure or quest came up for them. His loyalty remained unwavering in standing up for Morgana and Gwen, helping them out as well when the situation called for it. His good nature puts him in the good graces of nearly everyone he meets. This is how he is able to earn and gain the friendship of Arthur's future knights such as Gwaine, Lancelot, and Elyan.

As happy go lucky as he could seem, ducking Arthur's shots and trying to set him and Gwen up, Merlin carries his own darkness. He has suffered great loss from finding and losing his father as well as finding and losing his first love. His growing suspicion of Morgana conflicted him up until the final moment. He put the greater good of Camelot over the well being of his friend.

He lived his life in constant underlying fear. The law of Uther and Camelot was that magic was punishable by death. Merlin, even on his first day, had been constantly reminded about the consequences if he had let anyone into his secret. The frustration of learning magic in secret had bubbled up once in a while but Merlin knew better than to force the change; the change needed to come from Arthur first. He knew he could trust his friend to some day unite Albion and bring magic back to the land.

Character's skills/abilities/powers:
Merlin is able to cast spells in old English as those are the spells that he had learned. Though he has learned quite a few spells in his time, he still needs to consult books on specific ones. He also has telekinesis that is called upon as a knee-jerk reaction.

He is adept at making potions and poultices to treat minor injuries and maladies from his training as an apprentice physician. Studying under Gaius has given him a working knowledge of various herbs and medicines. Because of this, he had to become as familiar as he could with the human anatomy, given the historical placement of his period. He's able to treat minor injuries and bruising.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them?
The obvious reason is to take Merlin out of a medieval setting and put him in a very futuristic setting and see how he reacts to being in space as well as the advances in medicine and technology that come with being on a Federation starship. I also want him to explore different cultures and different magics. He's like a sponge and would be in awe at all the different types of creatures he would run into.

My plans for him would be for him to get comfortable with using his magic. This could be achieved by interacting with other magical characters and trying to see if he could imitate their powers or simply just learning of what life is like to not be living in fear of discovery.

Writing Sample #1:
He was quite sure that this beast that Arthur just had to poke with his blasted sword was going to be the end of all of them. He skidded along the hallway of the abandoned castle and hauled Arthur along with him. Someone had to keep the prat alive and the knights weren't doing a particularly great job of it. The stone groaned and rumbled beneath their feet until the sound of stone cracking away from each other echoed down the hall. There were shouts from the knights and Merlin didn't think twice about using his magic to push Arthur out of the way.

He heard Arthur shout for him and braced himself for the impending fall of the debris above him to crush him under their weight.

But something shifted. The uneven stone ground that had been the abandoned castle shifted into something that was far smoother and even. There wasn't the damp, dewy air of the wilds around him anymore. The air smelled...odd, off in the way that he had never experienced before. And cooler in a comfortable sense.

Merlin furrowed his brow and opened his eyes, jumping back a little. Where the devil was he? What sort of hallway was this? The colors on the wall were nothing like the dark grey stone granite that he had just been running past. He looked down the length of the hall one way, then another.

"Arthur?" he called out cautiously.

Obviously, an illusion. Merlin took off running down one hallway.

"Arthur!" But his voice barely echoed along this strange place and Merlin was starting to get concerned. Did his magic take him to this place? Did someone else's magic? He swallowed thickly. Did Morgana's magic do this? He shook his head. No, they were far enough away from Morgause and Morgana for them to have done anything.

He skidded to a stop when he saw a great glass window before him. And beyond that, the sight of the sky all around had his heart hammer in his chest.

Certainly not in Albion anymore.
